Psychological Factors Influencing Movement

The bodies movements, including the display of strength, is closely related to the athletes motivational level and objective.

Movement is connected to the sensory receptors, which facilitate a sufficient perception of stimuli and via the activation of motor units, determine muscle action.

The motor objective in exercise or sport, prepares the athletes body for the approaching action, which is influenced by the situation and the instructions of the coach.

Verbal commands about how heavy the weight is, can change the activation of the working muscles.

For example, the words "heavy weight" increase the tension of the working muscles whereas the words "light weight" decrease the activation of the same muscles.

The correct instructions can have a big effect on strength if they direct the athlete to perform the movement by highlighting certain characteristics or improving coordination.

This can guarantee the ideal combination of force and speed to produce the maximum effect for a given movement.
