Volume Vs Intensity

Research has shown that, in the yearly macrocycle, the weekly amount of volume and intensity coexist closely in sports requiring strength.

Normally, the greatest number of weeks involve medium volume or medium intensity as well as weeks with high volume or high intensity.

Studies suggest the following advice for sports requiring strength:

1. It is unwise to combine low volume with low intensity and high volume with high intensity for long periods (under training or over training).

2. Training is most productive and least injurious when -

Medium volume, medium intensity is used most regularly (around 12-15 weeks per year)

Medium-High Volume, Low intensity loading is utilized next most frequently (around 9-10 weeks per year)

Low Volume, Medium Intensity loading is then applied regularly after the first two combinations (around 6-7 weeks per year)

3. Other methods can be applied less frequently to either shock or recover the body, these include:

High Volume, Medium Intensity (3-4 weeks)

High Volume, High Intensity (2-3 weeks)

Low Volume, High Intensity (3-4 weeks)

Low Volume, Low Intensity (1-2 weeks)

On top of this, it is always crucial to pay attention to the athletes response to loading in order to formulate a productive training programme.
