The best athletes who perform at the highest level and avoid injury are very intelligent in understanding the process of activating muscles and groups of muscles.

They are experts at using mental imagery to control the motor unit recruitment process. The same techniques of neural integration can be applied to the general population who are rehabilitating.

Movement may occur from a conscious thought in the brain that gets muscle activation under way, or from a subconscious process involving an encoded pattern in the spinal cord.

Traumatic incidents can recode these patterns to uneasy states, the same as chronic and acute pain. Recoding these patterns back to normal Is paramount to the success of rehabilitation for both athletes and the general population.
