What are the benefits of the side bridge exercise?

The side bridge is an outstanding exercise to challenge the major stabilizers of the abdominal obliques, latissimus dorsi and quadratus lumborum, while sparing the spine from high loads.

Form should be characterized by a neutral spine and the rib cage locked to the pelvis.

Interestingly, Nelson-Wong and Callaghan (2014) observed that those with poorer side bridge endurance times were the first to develop pain when standing.

Those with scores above 70 seconds appear to have less back disorders, better posture and greater performance in daily tasks.

Building endurance and strength in the stabilizers is fundamental to injury prevention and athleticism.
