Overtraining

Overtraining and Exhaustion are both a result of imbalance between stress and adaptation of the body.

Adaptation leads to an increased functional level of the body where as stress depletes the current reserves.

Exhaustion is the product of short term imbalance where as overtraining is the product of imbalance accumulated over an extended period.

Overtraining is closely linked to an insufficient rate of recovery and adaptation of:

1) The Hormonal Systems

2) Nervous Processes

3) Cell Growth and Repair

4) The Energy Systems of the Body.

The symptoms of overtraining are not always clear but normally result in lingering fatigue, persistent injuries, lack of motivation or loss of progress.

With regard to strength training, overtraining injuries may be the consequence of too many reps or sets, training regularly with maximum loads, training the same muscles too frequently, insufficient recovery periods, inadequate rest or faulty movement patterns.

To avoid overtraining, an athletes body must be constantly monitored and recovery be planned in a way and at a rate suitable to the athletes present level of stress.
