Developing Mental Toughness

Sports training affects every aspect of an athlete - The skills, physical abilities and psychological characteristics.

Psychological training is required for developing an enhanced level of competitive form as well as for improving physical abilities.

Mental toughness development should be completed together with the development of physical abilities and skills.

The physical and mental features of sports training are inseparable and so are emotions and the physiological changes following them.

For example, imitating different emotional expressions causes physiological changes, such as increased or decreased heart/breath rate that are distinctive for a given emotion.

Studies have shown that making a person put their facial muscles in an arrangement normal for a given emotion produced that emotion. This has practical use for inducing the emotional state optimal for peak performance.

Mental Toughness is developed by overcoming difficulties. The difficulties have to be overcome consistently, not occasionally and the increased level of difficulty should not make them impossible to conquer.

An athlete must be taught to complete the training exercise. It should become a habit to always finish a task and be reliable. They must be convinced that there are no easy shortcuts to success and as this success draws nearer, the level of difficulty and effort increases.
