Types of Mesocycles Throughout the Annual Training Period (Macrocycle)

1. Introductory Mesocycle. This type of mesocycle starts a Macrocycle.

Normally it contains two to three general preparation cycles and one restoration microcycle.

Training intensity in the microcycles of this mesocycle is lower than in normal general preparation microcycles, although the volume may rise to high values, notably in endurance sports.

2. Basic Mesocycle. This is the main type of mesocycle for developing abilities and evolving skills.

It contains training loads of both high volume and intensity.

It is normally followed by a stabilizing period where the training loads do not increase.

This facilitates adaptation to the new training load. This is usually completed when an ability is developed adequately for the current demands.

3. Test Mesocycle. This Mesocycle combines training for developing athletic form with competitions that are sufficient for testing.

Depending on competition results, it may mean intensifying preparation where athletes lack sport specific form or decreasing training loads in cases of fatigue.

4. Pre Competition Mesocycle. This Mesocycle has the task of adapting athletes to conditions (climate, altitude) of the competition and optimizing the skills and abilities required for the competition.

The total load is reduced because results are not best when loads are increasing, but when loads stabilize or decrease.

5. Competition Mesocycle. This Mesocycle is used during competitions.

The design depends on the amount, significance and order of competitions, and the principles of maintaining athletic form.

6. Restorative Mesocycle. This Mesocycle restores working ability.

The form, capacity and conditions of training are adapted often to enhance the recovery process.
