Tactical training includes developing tactical thinking, mastering the theoretical basis of tactics, becoming proficient in the practical tactics including their variations and learning about opponents.

Practical tactical training should be incorporated into technical training. Theoretical tactical training can be included as part of lessons and seminars.

New tactics are practiced in arranged conditions or easier forms until the athletes perform them effortlessly.

The athletes then practice them in normal conditions and finally in harder than normal conditions.

The level of difficulty may be increased in one or more of the following ways -

1) The opponent is not restricted by fixed rules but the athlete must adhere to them all.

2) Time and/or Space of the the game is limited e.g. time of a round in boxing or the size of the field in football.

3) The number of attempts are limited e.g. in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu first takedown wins.

4) Additional movements are required on the coaches cue e.g. adding another type of strike in Muay Thai.

5) The athlete must achieve certain tactical exercises while at a physical disadvantage e.g. fatigued, smaller than opponent or at a psychological disadvantage e.g. adding in distractions.

As with all sports training, tactical training can be periodized into general, directed and sport specific training.
