Sport Specific Training Considerations

Some of the most important aspects for establishing sport specific training are:

1) Sports training should be a year round and multi year procedure.

Lay offs followed by less than 4 weeks of moderate pre season training can result in low levels of fitness and increased risk of injury.

2) Specialist Coaches are essential for the individual components of sports training.

This includes strategic skills, movement skills, physical conditioning, psychological readiness, biomechanical analysis, fitness assessment and physiotherapy regimens.

3) Strength and conditioning training should be added into every athletes plan.

It is not possible to potentiate strength, size, speed and flexibility without use of resistance training.

4) Sports preparation should begin with a pre-test phase to evaluate strength, speed, reaction time, endurance, flexibility and psychological readiness.

5) Sports sessions should be committed to enhancing tactical and technical skills rather than improving fitness.

Athletes should achieve the fitness needed supervised by a certified strength and conditioning specialist.

6) Analysis and Evaluation of movement skills should be performed frequently to assess imperfections which could limit performance.
